Once she had regained the privacy of her bedroom, Lady Cynthia rang for Hortense. “I must be rid of that Sophia Latimer as soon as possible!” she cried. “Robert Drysdale is proposing to follow her to India, where no doubt he will marry her. It is clear he is going to finish with me. What am I to do?”
Hortense's eyes darkened.
“It would be better if the girl were dead,” she said. “I would like to push her under a coach and let the horses kill her.”
“You could,” Lady Cynthia replied, “but there would be sure to be witnesses and you would be hanged for murder. I cannot live my life without you. There is no one else I can trust.”
Hortense kissed her comfortingly. “I think I know a way in which she can be shown to be a thief and a liar. Someone the likes of Sir Robert Drysdale would never want to see again when he found out the truth about her.”
She smiled at Lady Cynthia. “I have been thinking what to do and now I am sure I have a plan that will work.”
“What is it?” Lady Cynthia cried. “Tell me at once. Can it be done before London society knows that he has lost interest in me and intends to sail for India? I am only staving off the tradespeople because I have told them I am soon to become his wife.” She wrung her hands together “This girl has ruined everything for me.”
“Today, we will do it today,” Hortense replied. “I have thought it all out as I promised you I would. He would never want to see her again and you will once more be the only woman in his life.”
“You are sure it will not involve me? I cannot be involved in anything you intend to do to her!”
“Of course you will not be blamed,” Hortense replied confidently.
“If anything, you will tell him you want her to be forgiven. You will beg Sir Robert to give her another chance to redeem herself, but of course he will refuse.”
Hortense outlined her scheme and Lady Cynthia listened with growing admiration and profound relief that she would soon be able to provide Sir Robert Drysdale with irrefutable evidence that Sophia was both a liar and a thief!
